What system design means

Walkie talkie system design is the engineering of a complete two-way radio network for a building or site — coverage survey, repeaters, in-building BDA/DAS, antennas, programming and SKMM licensing. We design it, install it, prove it, and hand it over working.

01 — THE PROBLEM

Hand-portables die between floors.

Concrete slabs and lift cores swallow radio signal. On a tall building, level 30 can’t hear the lobby — and the basement hears nothing at all.

02 — THE REPEATER

One repeater changes the range.

A repeater on the roof plant rebroadcasts every transmission at full power, stretching coverage across the whole footprint instead of a single floor.

03 — BDA / DAS

We carry it down the core.

Bi-directional amplifiers and a distributed antenna system push the signal into stairwells, lift lobbies and the basement car park — the places radios usually fail.

04 — THE RESULT

Basement to rooftop. One talkgroup.

Security, engineering and front-of-house stay connected on every level, verified floor by floor with a walk test before we hand it over.

System design FAQ

Do I need a repeater for my building?+
Usually yes if your building has more than about six floors, heavy concrete or steel construction, or a basement. Hand-portable radios alone lose signal between floors and underground; a repeater on the roof or plant room rebroadcasts the signal so the whole building stays connected. Octogen confirms the exact need with an on-site coverage survey.
What is a BDA/DAS and when do I need one?+
A BDA (bi-directional amplifier) boosts radio signal, and a DAS (distributed antenna system) spreads it through a building via cabled antennas. You need them when a single repeater can’t reach basements, lift cores, tunnels, car parks and steel-framed high-rises. They are the standard solution for in-building radio coverage in Malaysian high-rises and malls.
Do I need a licence to use two-way radios in Malaysia?+
Yes for licensed UHF/VHF business radios — you need an SKMM/MCMC apportioned frequency licence, which Octogen applies for on your behalf. PoC (4G push-to-talk) radios run on a SIM card and don’t need a separate RF licence. Using unlicensed frequencies risks interference and penalties, so we make sure every system we design is compliant.
How long does a system deployment take?+
A typical building system runs from survey to commissioned handover in two to four weeks, depending on licensing turnaround and installation access. Simple single-repeater sites can be faster; large BDA/DAS or multi-building campuses take longer. We give you a dated timeline after the site survey.
Can you design coverage for tunnels, basements and high-rises?+
Yes — these are our specialty. We use repeaters, bi-directional amplifiers and distributed antennas to push radio coverage into basements, car parks, tunnels, lift cores and steel-framed towers up to 56 floors. Each design is verified with a walk test before handover.
Which brands do you design systems with?+
Octogen is an authorised supplier for Motorola, Hytera, Kenwood and Swiftcom, plus ATEX/IS intrinsically safe radios for flammable environments. We specify the brand and band (UHF, VHF or PoC) that best fits your coverage, budget and compliance needs.
Do you support the system after installation?+
Yes. After handover we provide ongoing programming, servicing, repair and accessory supply, plus optional fleet maintenance and loan units. Your radio system stays supported for its whole life, not just at install.
