The basics

What is PoC radio?

PoC — Push-to-Talk over Cellular — uses cellular networks (2G/3G/4G/5G) or Wi-Fi to deliver instant push-to-talk. It combines the one-touch simplicity of a walkie talkie with the wide coverage and multimedia of a smartphone, so there's no expensive radio infrastructure to build. Here's what happens when you press the button.

Step 1

Press PTT

One button on a dedicated PoC device or app — just like a walkie talkie.

Step 2

Voice → data

Your voice is digitised into data packets, ready for the mobile network.

Step 3

Cellular / Wi-Fi

Packets travel over the 4G/5G or Wi-Fi network to the PoC server.

Step 4

Group hears it

The server fans the audio out to your recipient or whole group, instantly.

Head to head

PoC radio vs conventional walkie talkie.

Both give instant push-to-talk. The difference is how far they reach, what else they can do, and how they're paid for.

PoC radio

Cellular-powered, wide-area, multi-function

  • Coverage — nationwide, even cross-border, anywhere there's cellular or Wi-Fi.
  • Features — HD voice plus video, images, text, GPS positioning, track playback and SOS.
  • Infrastructure — none to build; uses the existing mobile network.
  • Cost — a per-device data SIM / platform fee, usually less than building a base station.
  • Catch — needs network signal; no coverage means no comms.
Conventional UHF / VHF

Direct radio, local, no monthly fee

  • Coverage — local; extended with a repeater, but bounded by range, terrain and buildings.
  • Features — voice (and data on digital), single-function and rugged.
  • Infrastructure — radios you own; a repeater for bigger sites.
  • Cost — one-time purchase, no recurring data fee.
  • Catch — needs an MCMC apparatus assignment for the frequency.

Advantages & limitations of PoC.

Advantages

Why teams switch to PoC

  • Nationwide-to-global coverage, instantly — no range limit, no base station.
  • HD voice, video and data in one device for richer, faster information.
  • Real-time GPS positioning and track playback for dispatch and safety.
  • Encrypted channels and dispatch controls for secure team operations.
Limitations

What to plan around

  • Network dependence — no cellular or Wi-Fi signal means no communication.
  • Recurring data / platform fees, though usually lower than building a base station.
  • Battery life can be shorter than long-standby radios when using data features.
  • Rare, minimal voice latency under extreme network congestion.
PoC is growing fast across Malaysian industry — logistics, construction, hotels and event management are adopting it for wide-area coordination, GPS dispatch and lower infrastructure cost. But it isn't a universal replacement: for a fixed single site with no-signal zones or strict zero-latency needs, conventional UHF/VHF radios or a repeater can still be the better tool. Octogen supplies PoC radios, conventional two-way radios, accessories and rental, and can advise on the right mix for Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, Penang and Melaka.
Answers

Common PoC questions.

Do PoC radios need an MCMC licence in Malaysia?
PoC radios communicate over the licensed cellular network using a data SIM, so the end user typically doesn't need a separate radio-frequency apparatus assignment the way conventional UHF/VHF two-way radios on dedicated frequencies do. The device itself should be SIRIM-certified. Conventional radios, by contrast, generally require an MCMC apparatus assignment for the frequency — see our MCMC licence guide for details.
What's the monthly cost of a PoC radio?
PoC runs on a data SIM or platform subscription per device, so there is a recurring fee — but it's usually lower than building and maintaining your own repeater base station. Conventional radios have no monthly fee but are limited to local coverage. The right choice depends on coverage area and feature needs.
Does PoC work without a phone signal?
No. PoC depends on cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, so it can't be used in areas with no signal — underground levels, remote sites or signal dead zones. For those, conventional radios or an on-site repeater are more reliable. Many sites run a hybrid of both.
What's the difference between PoC and a normal walkie talkie?
A normal walkie talkie transmits directly (or via a repeater) on radio frequencies, giving local coverage with no monthly fee. PoC sends digitised voice over the mobile network to a server that fans it out to the group, giving nationwide coverage plus video, GPS and SOS — in exchange for a data fee and network dependence.
Can PoC radios track team location?
Yes. Because PoC devices use the cellular network, most support real-time GPS positioning and track playback, letting managers see team locations live for dispatch efficiency and emergency response — a key advantage over conventional radios.
